how can i hook a intricate drive from my old-fashioned computer that doesnt work to my computer to retrieve its contents?

It's pretty smooth. Just set the jumper on the subsidise to 'slave' (there should be a diagram printed on the hard drive, or the packages 'SL' printed above one set of pins), then connect the power connector to a spare one from your system, and connect the interface to a spare IDE or SATA connector - you can unplug your CD-ROM drive temporarily if you don't own any spares. The cables usually own 2 connectors each on them, you can use any of the connectors.



Of course, make sure your computer is turned bad while you are doing all of this. Unplug it, too, freshly to be sure.
change your brand new hard drive to master, and the prehistoric bad drive to slave, next you can access it.
